Germany Reacts To Putin's Statement

Berlin believes the Russian dictator is not ready to negotiate.

German federal government spokesman Stephan Cornelius said that Berlin has taken into account statements by Russian dictator Vladimir Putin about his readiness to talk to German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, but doubts the seriousness of these intentions.

This is reported by "Ukrinform".

He noted that there is "no direct contact" with Putin, and the country's government is convinced that Putin himself "is not seeking substantive negotiations."

"The German government is constantly, comprehensively and intensively assessing the situation in Ukraine. It is now engaged in intensive discussions with its allies ... regarding how Russia's war of aggression can be stopped. Of course, the German government has constantly stated its urgent desire to bring this war to a political conclusion. I don't see the Russian president responding to these frequently expressed wishes for a political solution," Cornelius noted.

The day before, Putin had first said he was ready for talks with Merz if he himself wanted to call and talk. At the same time, the Kremlin dictator said that Russia "does not consider Germany as a neutral country" and threatened consequences if it transfers Taurus missiles to Ukraine.

On May 10, Merz announced the strengthening of sanctions against Russia if Russian dictator Vladimir Putin does not agree to a ceasefire and said he did not rule out talking to Putin.
