Austria May Consider Joining NATO

The former head of the Defense Ministry named the condition.

Neutral Austria may consider NATO membership if Slovakia leaves the Alliance.

A former Austrian Defense Minister Werner Fasslabend said this in an interview with Dennik N.

Fasslabend noted that Austria is almost completely surrounded by NATO member states. And in the event of an attack from the east, the country expects that Russia would have to first pass through Slovakia, which is in NATO.

"If Slovakia were to withdraw from NATO, this would worsen the security situation for Austria as well. It would certainly cause a big debate about Austria's NATO membership and possible NATO membership," the former minister emphasized.

Fasslabend, who is now director of the Austrian Institute for European and Security Policy, recognizes that Austria benefits from its geographical position.

"This is one of the reasons why it is said that Austria is not currently under immediate threat. It is surrounded by NATO member states and is therefore relatively safe," he added.
