Armenian PM Arrives In Turkey On Historic Visit

Despite sharing a common border, there are no diplomatic relations between Turkey and Armenia.

The plane carrying Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan landed at Istanbul International Airport on the morning of June 20, where he was met by Turkish Deputy Foreign Minister Berris Ekinji, the press service of the Armenian government said and published footage of the meeting. It specified that Pashinyan arrived in Turkey on a "working visit".

The prime minister will meet with representatives of the local Armenian community in the afternoon, and in the evening - with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.

The Armenian delegation, in addition to Pashinyan, includes 12 people. In particular, the prime minister is accompanied by Armenian Foreign Minister Ararat Mirzoyan, Deputy Foreign Minister Vahan Kostanyan, Deputy Speaker of Parliament and Special Representative for the Normalization of Relations between Yerevan and Ankara Ruben Rubinian.

Despite a common border, Turkey and Armenia have no diplomatic relations. In 2009 in Zurich, the foreign ministers of the two states signed protocols on establishing diplomatic relations, but the documents were not ratified. In March 2018, Yerevan announced their annulment.

In June 2023, Pashinyan visited Turkey to attend President Erdogan's inauguration ceremony.

In early June 2025, Pashinyan and Erdogan held phone talks. The politicians discussed bilateral relations and regional issues and agreed to continue dialog.
