Couldn't Get Through To Ayatollah's Bunker: US-Iran Talks Break Down

Couldn't Get Through To Ayatollah's Bunker: US-Iran Talks Break Down
Ali Khamenei

Ali Khamenei has not made contact.

US President Donald Trump wanted to hold talks with Iran, but supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei did not get in touch. He could not be reached.

This is reported by Axios.

According to the publication, Trump and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan tried to quietly organize a meeting with Iran this week. It was to be held in Istanbul between senior officials from Washington and Tehran.

In particular, Trump received a call from Erdogan on Monday during a meeting with G7 leaders in Canada. He suggested that he hold a meeting between officials from the two countries in Istanbul the next day to explore a diplomatic solution to the Israel-Iran war.

Trump agreed and informed Erdogan that he was willing to send U.S. Vice President J.D. Vance and White House special envoy Steve Whitkoff. Moreover, the White House chief was prepared to personally travel to Turkey to meet with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian if that was necessary to seal the deal.

The White House official said that hours before Erdogan's call, Trump had received "signals" from the Iranians through other unofficial channels that they wanted to meet. The official said that although Trump's personal involvement was discussed, the more serious plan was to send Whitkoff.

Sources said that Erdogan and Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan then took the offer to Pezeshkian and Spanish Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi.

According to the two U.S. officials, Pezeshkian and Araghchi tried to contact Iran's supreme leader to get his approval. But Khamenei, who was in hiding for fear of being assassinated by Israel, was unavailable.

After several hours, the Iranian side informed the Turks that it could not get Khamenei's approval. Turkey then informed the U.S. that the meeting was canceled.
