What does Trump's strikes on Tehran's nuclear facilities accomplish?
By attacking Iran's nuclear facilities, US President Donald Trump took a very big risk, but in doing so he sent an important signal to America's enemies.
The British newspaper The Telegraph in a publication that by hitting Fordow, Natanz and Isfahan, Trump demonstrated that he wants to be the one to sink Iran.
According to the author of the publication, Trump promised during his election campaign to avoid international conflicts. But according to insiders, the strikes on Iran are not a departure from those statements, but a reminder that U.S. power is based on the idea of "peace through strength."
The article also cites a former official, whose name was not disclosed, who pointed out that Trump remains a leader for whom deals are above military action. But he realizes that the best deals can be made when adversaries negotiate from a weakened position.
For his part, Gabriel Noronha, a former U.S. State Department adviser on Iran, pointed out in a comment to the publication that by striking Tehran's three nuclear sites, "Trump is going all-in." He also added that Trump is delivering the final blow to Iran's nuclear program, "and he will want recognition for that."
The Telegraph also quoted Simone Ledeen, former deputy assistant secretary of defense for the Middle East, who stressed that the US strikes reminded the world that "Trump is more than just a negotiator."
"It's a really powerful message to China and Russia and anyone else who thinks the U.S. has weakened," Simone Ledeen said.
