Earlier, Iraq and Jordan had taken a similar decision in addition to Iran and Israel, which continue to exchange strikes.
Qatar is temporarily closing its airspace to ensure the safety of its citizens, residents and visitors. The corresponding statement was published on the page of the Qatari Foreign Ministry in social network X.
"Within the framework of the obligations of the State of Qatar to ensure the safety of its citizens, residents and visitors, the competent authorities announce the temporary suspension of traffic in the airspace of the country. This is part of a set of precautionary measures taken in connection with developments in the region," the statement said.
The decision was taken against the backdrop of Iran's threats to retaliate against the United States following strikes on its nuclear facilities. The Qatari Foreign Ministry noted that the authorities are closely monitoring the situation, assessing developments together with regional and international partners.
Qatar is home to the largest U.S. airbase in the Middle East, Al-Udeid, which houses the operational headquarters of the U.S. Central Command of the U.S. Armed Forces (CENTCOM). On June 19, Reuters quoted sources as saying that the United States had withdrawn some planes and ships from its military bases in the Middle East, which could be hit by Iran if the conflict with Israel escalates. One of the agency's interlocutors specified that the military planes, which were at the Al-Udeid airbase in unprotected hangars, were transferred to other locations.
