Musk Has A Real Competitor

Amazon has put a second batch of internet satellites into orbit.

Amazon Corporation has launched the second batch of Internet satellites into low-Earth orbit as part of the more than $10 billion Kuiper project, a direct competitor to Ilon Musk's Starlink satellite Internet system.

27 satellites successfully launched into space in April, as well as 27 new vehicles launched today, are just a small initial part of Amazon's planned "mega constellation" involving more than 3,200 spacecraft, reports CNET.

The satellite link is intended to bring internet access to remote areas that lack traditional broadband access based on underground cables.

Federal Communications Commission rules require Amazon to launch half of its fleet by July 2026, making each launch critical to achieving that goal. And whether it will be able to meet that requirement with such a launch rate is a big question.

In comparison, during the stretch that Amazon has been sending 54 satellites into orbit, SpaceX has made 25 launches and put 648 spacecraft into orbit. And although the Kuiper project is positioned as the main competitor to Ilon Musk's Starlink, in fact a full-fledged competition between them is possible only in the distant future.
