The principle of collective defense is inviolable.
The United States remains committed to the principle of collective defense in the North Atlantic Alliance.
U.S. President Donald Trump said so, The Guardian reported.
When asked about his commitment to Article 5 of the NATO charter, Trump said, "We're with them to the end."
In his speech at the NATO summit in The Hague, Trump noted the importance of a plan to increase defense spending to 5% of GDP.
"I've been asking them to raise the rate to 5% for several years , and they raised it to 5%, that's a big [jump] compared to 2%. And a lot of people weren't even paying 2%, so I think it's going to be very big news," he said.
He believes that "with 5%, the Europeans and Canadians will equal their defense spending with the United States." (The U.S. actually spends less than 4%," ed.).
"So it's not that American taxpayers are paying more; it's that Europeans and Canadians are paying more," Trump added.
