All 24 drones reached and hit their targets, bypassing Russian-made air defenses.
On the night of June 24, Iraq was hit by unknown kamikaze drones that struck a number of strategic sites in the country despite the presence of 24 Russian Pantsir-S1 anti-aircraft missile-cannon systems. Those systems, which form the backbone of Iraq's air defense, proved unable to repel the attack.
As Defense Post reports, the strikes hit radar stations at Taji military base and Imam Ali Air Base near Dhi Qar. One of the drones landed in close proximity to Baghdad International Airport, where US troops engaged in the fight against ISIS are stationed.
Most disturbingly, Iraqi forces were unable to even locate the drone's launch point, and the US and Israel are mentioned among the preliminary versions of responsibility for the attack. Significantly, the incident was the first since the 12-day closure of Iraqi airspace due to the conflict between Iran and Israel.
Russian Pantsirs, which were supposed to protect strategic sites, have demonstrated complete ineffectiveness against modern kamikaze UAVs, which casts a shadow on their combat effectiveness in the current environment.
Defense Express writes that this case is a serious signal to countries that still rely on Russian air defense, because even with air control and combat readiness - the result was zero.
In parallel, Iraq has already contracted new KM-SAM air defense systems from South Korea - probably as a reaction to the limited effectiveness of Russian counterparts.
