Latvia Expects 10 Thousand Attempts To Break The Border From Belarus

The country has extended the special border regime.

On Wednesday, June 25, the Latvian government decided to extend the enhanced mode of operation of the border guard system on the border with Belarus until December 31 this year, writes Delfi. Latvian border guards can prevent up to 10,000 attempts to illegally cross the Latvian-Belarusian border by the end of this year, said Interior Minister Rihards Kozlovskis.

In the past few days, more than 160 people have already tried to illegally cross the border between Latvia and Belarus, a total of 5,534 people have been stopped there since the beginning of the year. At the same time, 12 people have not been prevented from crossing the border this year for humane reasons.

Last year, a total of 5,388 people were restrained from illegally crossing the Latvian-Belarusian border, while the country accepted 26 people for humane reasons.

Kozlovskis noted that it is already clear: by the end of this year, the figure may exceed more than 10,000 illegal immigrants - the pressure supported by Belarus using illegal migration continues. That is why the regime of enhanced border protection is being introduced.
