Archbishop Of The Armenian Apostolic Church Arrested
Bagrat Galstanyan

He may be involved in a pro-Russian coup attempt.

A court in Armenia has granted a petition to arrest the leader of the Sacred Struggle movement Bagrat Galstanyan for two months, News.am writes.

The court earlier granted the petitions for the arrest of Nagorno-Karabakh's so-called national assembly deputy David Galstanyan, Archbishop Bagrat Galstanyan's aide Movses Sharbatyan, blogger Armen Alexanyan and reserve colonel Migran Makhsudyan for two months.

A total of 16 individuals have been petitioned to the court for arrest.

On Wednesday morning, searches were conducted in the homes of supporters of the Sacred Struggle movement in Armenia. They also carried out actions at the residence of Archbishop Bagrat Galstanyan, after which he was detained.

The Armenian Investigative Committee released a statement on Wednesday, according to which the participants and organizers of the "Sacred Struggle" planned to commit terrorist acts in Armenia and attempt to overthrow the government.

A variety of individuals, including former policemen and servicemen, were allegedly involved in the preparations. The IC has also published a number of audio recordings; the opposition denies this.

Pashinyan's government seriously fears a Russian-backed coup.
