Armenia's prime minister called the organization a "bubble union."
Armenia may make a final decision to withdraw from the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO) if the member states, including Russia, do not make a clear political position on Azerbaijan's actions. Armenian Deputy Foreign Minister Vahan Kostanyan said. "In the end, if the CSTO partners, including the Russian Federation, do not make political statements, which were discussed several years ago, after the attack on the sovereign territory of the Republic of Armenia, Armenia will make a final decision," Kostanyan said (quoted by Novosti-Armenia).
Yerevan no longer makes hints, but speaks extremely frankly, the deputy foreign minister noted. He also pointed out that Armenia as a sovereign state will independently determine the right moment for further steps.
In February 2024, Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan announced the freezing of Armenia's participation in the CSTO, and in May the Armenian Foreign Ministry said that the country refuses to finance the work of the organization. In January this year, Armenia's Foreign Intelligence Service published a public report saying that the country does not intend to return to full participation in the CSTO in the near future. "We consider it unlikely that in 2025 the reasons why Armenia suspended its membership will change. On this basis, the prestige of the organization remains under serious question and becomes a 'cause for reflection' for other member countries," the document said.
The rift in relations with Russia and the CSTO came after fighting between Armenia and Azerbaijan in Nagorno-Karabakh, when Yerevan officially appealed to the allies for support. However, the Moscow-dominated organization limited itself to expressing "concern" and "condolences." Pashinyan has since repeatedly criticized the CSTO for not providing assistance to Yerevan, and the prime minister also called the organization a "bubble alliance" that he claims, together with Baku, was "planning a war" against Armenia.
