WP: Iran Was Preparing Assassination Attempts On Trump And Pompeo

The politician's security has gone into "martial law" mode.

Iranian agents were preparing an assassination attempt on Donald Trump during his election campaign. The politician's guards were forced into "martial law" mode and recently stepped up their defenses again.

The Washington Post reports The Washington Post.

The publication notes that such versions of events are contained in a new book about the incumbent's presidential campaign titled "2024: How Trump Recaptured the White House and Democrats Lost America," authored by Josh Dawsey, Tyler Pager and Isaac Arnsdorf. The book is scheduled to be released next month.

According to its contents, in September 2024, U.S. intelligence informed Trump's campaign team of the presence of Iranian assassins on U.S. soil. The book notes that threats from Iran significantly affected the daily behavior of the candidate and his team, causing changes in routes and security measures during the election campaign.

At the same time, law enforcement agencies are investigating the likely involvement of individuals who prepared assassination attempts with Iranian intelligence agencies, but so far no such ties have been found.

The Assassination of Mike Pompeo

The book also notes that in the three years before Trump was elected president, Iranian agents attempted to eliminate high-ranking U.S. officials at least three times.

Two of those attempts have already been made public, but information about an assassination attempt on former Secretary of State Mike Pompeo in Paris in 2022 is being made public for the first time.

The book notes that Iranian agents learned about the hotel where Pompeo was staying and tried to assassinate him. The politician escaped the assassination attempt, but no additional details are given.

The book's authors cite interviews with hundreds of people, including members of the campaign staff, the White House and security agencies, as well as memos, e-mails, calendar entries and audio files.

In his book Never Give an Inch (2023), Pompeo claimed that a member of Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, who was charged with plotting to assassinate Bolton, also planned to hire a hit man to assassinate himself for a $1 million reward.

Pompeo wrote that the plan was well-planned, with assailants staking out his home and office. He noted that other U.S. citizens, including former Trump administration officials, military and civilians, remain on Iranian intelligence agencies' target list.

Mission - Survive

On September 24, 2024, Donald Trump was informed of the presence of several Iranian assassination teams in the United States. Six weeks later, authorities arrested a man described as an "Iranian agent" who investigators said was making preparations for an assassination attempt on Trump. There were no further arrests in the case.

Under pressure, the headquarters took security measures on its own: chemical weapons sensors were installed in the office, an explosives-detecting robot patrolled Mar-a-Lago, staffers carried guns, and the campaign's political director, James Blair, kept a bulletproof vest under his desk. After receiving the threats, the Republican National Committee posted guards outside the home of a campaign manager.

The book notes that the continuous threats affected Trump's emotional state, in part by limiting his usual activities, such as playing golf.

In summarizing the campaign events, Trump, according to the authors, said, "I must win. Survive and win. Because if not, we're finished."

Bait Planes and New Threats

The book notes that in 2024, threats to Trump's life significantly impacted the campaign. Mar-a-Lago, the former president's Florida residence, was effectively turned into a fortified facility.

Security officials convinced Trump to travel by a decoy plane owned by investor Steve Witkoff, the current U.S. special envoy to the Middle East. Decoy planes and vehicle escorts along the runway have also been used on separate occasions.

Trump's team has altered pickup and travel patterns, and during one incident, Secret Service agents were ordered to board the plane quickly and keep their heads low because of the risk of sniper attacks or missile strikes.

Despite the security measures, there have been two assassination attempts on Trump in 2024: during a rally in Butler, when a bullet grazed his ear, and in West Palm Beach, where an armed man was apprehended after leaving a note with the intent to kill the politician. In those cases, the investigation is ongoing, but no direct link to Iran has been established.

After recent U.S. airstrikes on Iran, U.S. and Western intelligence agencies said they expect a possible response from Tehran or its proxy groups.
