More than 700 thousand people were left without light.
The Russian-occupied territories of Ukraine's Zaporizhzhya and Kherson regions have been de-energized. The large-scale power outage was reported by the Kremlin-appointed heads of the occupation administrations, The Moscow Times.
"As a result of shelling by the AFU, high-voltage equipment in the northwestern part of Zaporizhzhya region has been damaged. There is no electricity throughout the region," Evgeny Balitsky, the "governor" of Zaporizhzhya, wrote in his Telegram channel. According to his data, the shutdown affected 457 settlements with 600,000 people. He instructed the region's energy ministry to find backup sources of electricity "in a short time".
At the same time, 150 settlements in Genichesk, Novotroitsk, Ivanovo and Nizhneserogoz districts were left without power supply in the part of Kherson region occupied by the Russian army. More than 104 thousand people live in them, said the head of the occupation administration Vladimir Saldo. According to him, the blackout was caused by damage caused by shrapnel from downed drones to a substation in Genicheskiy district of Kherson region and a substation in Melitopol district of Zaporizhzhya region. "All critical facilities are connected to backup power sources. Power engineers and employees of the Ministry of Emergency Situations are working on the site. <...> Specialists are promptly developing a scheme of alternative switching on," - said Saldo.
Before that, a large-scale power outage in the Zaporizhzhya region occurred in February this year. Then the Russian head of the region Balitsky claimed that the cause was attacks by Ukrainian drones on high-voltage equipment in the northwest of the region. The city of Energodar, where Europe's largest Zaporizhzhya nuclear power plant is located, was also left without power. In January, electricity supply was cut off in Skadovskiy, Kalanchak and Golopristanskiy districts of Kherson region. The occupation authorities explained this by damage to power lines as a result of shelling.
