This could be a "bargaining chip" for Tokyo in tariff negotiations.
U.S. President Donald Trump discussed cooperation with Tokyo in developing technology for the planned Golden Dome missile defense shield project during a phone call with Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba this month, according to Reuters.
The two countries are expected to work together on "incoming threat interception systems" - Japan's involvement could be a "bargaining chip" for the country to gain concessions in tariff negotiations with Washington, the Nikkei wrote. The two countries already have a history of cooperating on missile defense.
This month, Trump announced plans for a defense shield and named U.S. Space Force General Michael Getlein to lead the $175 billion project. Trump wants to complete the project before the end of his presidential term in 2029. The Congressional Budget Office estimates the Golden Dome could cost $831 billion dollars over two decades.
China has already expressed "grave concerns" about the U.S. project and urged the United States to abandon its development.
