US President Donald Trump announced the withdrawal of entrepreneur Jared Isaacman's nomination to head NASA.
He made the announcement on his Truth Social platform on Saturday, emphasizing that the decision came after analyzing the candidate's "previous ties".
Aizekman, a billionaire and founder of Shift4 Payments, was considered a close ally of Ilon Musk and one of the top contenders to lead the space agency. Last December, Trump called him his favorite, noting Isaacman's achievements in commercial spaceflight and involvement in SpaceX missions.
But according to the New York Times, the resignation is linked to information about the entrepreneur's financial donations to a number of prominent Democrats, which has caused discontent in Trump's inner circle. The White House said in a commentary to AFP that "the next head of NASA must fully share President Trump's 'America First in Space' agenda."
The same report stresses that the future head of the agency will be responsible for implementing an ambitious program to return Americans to the moon and plant a US flag on Mars.
The resignation of Isaacman from the list of candidates was a tangible blow to Ilon Musk, who, according to media reports, had personally promoted the entrepreneur's candidacy. The day after the decision, Musk resigned as head of the Trump administration's Council on Government Efficiency.
Sam Isaacman is one of the few non-professional astronauts to go into space. Last September, he made a historic exit from SpaceX's Crew Dragon capsule, becoming the first private figure in such a mission.
Trump has now promised to soon announce a new candidate to lead NASA.
