Tomas Venclova is asking for help to save the Nobel laureate.

Lithuanian poet and Soviet dissident, one of the first human rights activists in the USSR Tomas Venclova has appealed to Pope Leo XIV to intervene and demand the immediate release from prison of political prisoner, Nobel Peace Prize laureate Ales Belyatsky. This is reported by Leonid Sudalenko.

"Ales was sentenced to 10 years in prison on a fabricated case. This is the second imprisonment for his many years of selfless struggle for human rights. He is in a colony with harsh conditions, without medical care, with a threat to life.

Pope Benedict XVI, through his representative, has already expressed support for him. Now a new Pope's voice is needed. After all, it is the moral authority of the Vatican that can save the life of the only Nobel laureate behind bars in the world today," writes Leonid Sudalenko.

Ales Bialiatski is the head and founder of the human rights center "Viasna". He was detained on July 14, 2021 and sentenced to 10 years in prison allegedly for smuggling and financing group actions that grossly violate public order. He won the Nobel Peace Prize while in detention in 2022.
