A Tanker Carrying A Million Barrels Of Oil Exploded Off The Coast Of Libya

Prior to that, the vessel had twice called at Russian ports.

The oil tanker Vilamoura, carrying 1 million barrels of oil, exploded off the coast of Libya. The ship had twice called at Russian ports, Bloomberg reported.

The Vilamoura tanker is being towed to Greece, where experts will assess the damage. A spokesman for TMS Tankers said the explosion flooded the engine room and water is entering the hull. The exact cause of the accident is not yet known.

History of the vessel and ties to Russian ports

Vilamoura called at the Russian port of Ust-Luga in early April, where she loaded Kazakh-origin oil. In May, it also called at the Caspian Pipeline Consortium terminal near the Russian port of Novorossiysk, which loads mostly Kazakh oil.

Crew safe, no pollution

The company manager said there was no pollution as a result of the incident. All crew members are safe.

Vilamoura changed course after the incident and is heading to Greece. The vessel is expected in one of the ports, where technical diagnostics will be carried out and the extent of damage will be assessed.

Series of mysterious explosions

According to the consulting company Vanguard Tech, since the beginning of the year, similar explosions have occurred with four more ships. All of them had previously called at Russian ports.

After such incidents, shipowners began using divers and underwater drones to check ship hulls for mines and other threats.
