The executive director and editor-in-chief of the Baku branch were detained.
According to @minval_az, the executive director of the Baku branch Igor Kartavykh and editor-in-chief Evgeny Belousov have been detained.
The Azerbaijani Interior Ministry said that despite the fact that the accreditation of the Baku branch of the Russia Today News Agency (Sputnik Azerbaijan) was terminated in February 2025, the agency launched an investigation based on the received operational information about the continuation of the branch's activities on the basis of illegal financing.
On June 30, the branch office was searched, and there are detainees.

Relations between Azerbaijan and Russia escalated after more than 50 people of Azerbaijani origin were detained in Yekaterinburg on June 27. At least two people were killed during the detention. Baku demanded that the perpetrators be brought to justice, and the Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry expressed a "strong protest" to the Russian ambassador. Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said afterwards that the detainees were Russian citizens.
With this background, the Azerbaijani parliamentary delegation decided not to participate in the meeting of the commission of the Milli Majlis of the republic and the Federal Assembly of Russia on interparliamentary cooperation, and the Azerbaijani Ministry of Culture canceled all joint cultural events planned in Azerbaijan by Russian state and private institutions.
