Russia To Block 15 European Media Outlets

In response to EU sanctions.

The Russian authorities will block access to the websites of 15 European media outlets, the Russian Foreign Ministry said on Monday, June 30. It explained that such a decision was taken in response to the 16th sanctions package of the European Union, which included eight Russian publications and channels, including Eurasia Daily, Lenta and Krasnaya Zvezda.

Moscow accused the Europeans of "unwinding the sanctions spiral." Exactly which European media outlets will be blocked was not specified. "If the restrictions on domestic publications and information channels are lifted, the Russian side will also reconsider its decision regarding European media," the Russian Foreign Ministry added.

The EU adopted the 16th package of sanctions on February 24, 2025, the third anniversary of Russia's full-scale military invasion of Ukraine. Brussels added 48 individuals and 35 entities to the penalty list. Among other things, measures against disinformation were expanded and the activities of eight more propaganda media in the EU or aimed at European audiences were suspended.

The EADaily / Eurasia Daily, Fondsk, Lenta, NewsFront, RuBaltic, SouthFront, Strategic Culture Foundation and Krasnaya Zvezda were blacklisted for "supporting and justifying Russian aggression against Ukraine." Their EU broadcasting licenses have been suspended. However, the penalties will not prevent these media outlets and their staff from "carrying out activities other than broadcasting in the EU, such as conducting research and giving interviews", Brussels emphasized.
