The Pervomaisky district court in Bishkek sentenced former Kyrgyz President Almazbek Atambaev in absentia to 11.5 years in prison in three criminal cases, combined into one proceeding. This was reported on Tuesday, June 3, by the AKIpress.
Investigators say the former head of state is guilty of illegal appropriation of land plots in the village of Koi-Tash in Alamudun district of Chui province of Kyrgyzstan, illegal enrichment and participation in the August 7-8, 2019 riots.
The court also ruled that Atambayev should be subject to confiscation of property and deprivation of state awards. He is ordered to pay a large monetary fine.
Atambayev's lawyer - Sergei Slesarev - in turn suggested that the judge had no right to combine the proceedings, the portal "24.kg" reported.
The former head of the presidential staff Farid Niyazov was also convicted in the case, he was sentenced to 7 years and 8 months in prison.
Almazmek Atambayev headed Kyrgyzstan from 2011 to 2017. He was stripped of his presidential immunity in June 2019, facing corruption charges.
Late on August 7, 2019, law enforcement agencies twice tried to storm Atambayev's residence in the village of Koi-Tash. The clashes continued the next day, but in a special operation involving some 3,000 police officers, Atambayev surrendered. During the unrest 225 people were injured and one of the special forces was killed.
