The world is learning from the example of Ukraine.
Fast, efficient and cheap Ukrainian drones can not only destroy enemy equipment and manpower, but also carry out truly unique operations.
Ukraine has emerged as a world leader in drone warfare, using cheap but effective drones to deter Russian invasion and destroy enemy equipment that is thousands of times more expensive. FPV drones, which cost about $400, have shown stunning effectiveness in hitting armored vehicles, warehouses and command posts, writes Bloomberg.
British RUSI estimates that up to 70% of Russian equipment losses in 2025 are caused by drones. Ukrainian drones have already raided as far away as Siberia, hitting strategic targets including airbases.
The types of drones that are changing modern warfare:
FPV drones: real-time precision strikes with video control.
Kamikaze drones: glider systems with long flight times.
Deep strike drones: Ukrainian analogs of Shahedovs hit oil depots and military plants in Russia.
Sea drones: scare Russian ships away from the Black Sea.
Reconnaissance drones: provide artillery with precise information, even in buildings or forests.
The world is learning from Ukraine's example. Taiwan, Israel, EU countries and the US are beefing up drone programs, recognizing a new reality on the battlefield.
Ukraine produced 1 million drones in 2024, plans 2.5 million in 2025. More than 500 companies, from startups to giants, compete to innovate. More than $2.5 billion has been earmarked for local manufacturing.
Artificial intelligence and fiber optics
The latest technology allows drones to operate autonomously, overcoming jamming and GPS spoofing. Isolating the operator from direct control increases the survival rate of the tech.
Russia is trying to catch up, launching mass production in Tatarstan and creating anti-drone corridors, but new Ukrainian tactics have already changed the front.
