Netanyahu Could Lose Power?

The ruling coalition in Israel is on the verge of collapse.

A political crisis is brewing in Israel: leaders of the orthodox United Torah Judaism alliance are preparing to leave Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu's ruling coalition under pressure from senior rabbis. The reason is the lack of progress in passing a law exempting students of spiritual schools (yeshivas) from military service. This was reported by The Jerusalem Post.

On Wednesday, leading rabbi Moshe Hillel Hirsch said he would "probably" instruct one of the alliance factions to leave the coalition "in the near future" over the government's failure to pass a law that would exempt most ultra-Orthodox men from military service.

The Degel ha-Torah, one of the two factions of United Torah Judaism, together with the Agudas Yisrael party, is already reportedly pushing a bill to dissolve the Knesset, which could lead to early elections.

Religious parties have previously demanded that the law be passed before the Shavuot holiday (June 2), threatening to destabilize the government if it fails.
