Netanyahu: Israel Cooperates With Palestinian Groups Against Hamas
Benjamin Netanyahu

Israel's prime minister gave the reason.

Israel's military in the Gaza Strip turns out to be cooperating with some "Palestinian factions." According to Israeli Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu, the government has "activated cooperation" with Palestinian groups in Gaza, which oppose Hamas terrorists, by order of the government.

Netanyahu did not name any of these groups, and did not explain what kind of cooperation we are talking about. In turn, the Associated Press found out that the so-called Abu Shabab Popular Force, led by Yasser Abu Shabab, cooperates with the Israelis.

The said group operates in the city of Rafah. The publication notes that it is one of the "armed Palestinian groups" that "has some control in parts of Gaza" and in the past "has had clashes or tensions with Hamas." And the vast majority of such clans have said after Netanyahu's account of the cooperation that they reject any relationship with the Israelis.

Netanyahu said the government agreed to the cooperation on the advice of security officials "to save the lives of Israeli soldiers."

Abu Shabab confirms that it is helping to protect humanitarian supplies to the new, Israeli-backed Food Distribution Centers. The group publicly last month declared itself a "nationalist force" defending humanitarian aid.

Abu Shabab emphasizes that it has somehow resorted to engaging with the Israeli military "for purely humanitarian" reasons.

"We are not intermediaries for anyone. We have not received any military or logistical support from any foreign party. We only provide security around the Humanitarian Centers, but we have never participated in the distribution of food," the group said.

The Abu Shabab statement was made against the backdrop of a "smear campaign" (as they define it) - accusations of looting.

These accusations are primarily made by UN representatives. Thus, the head of the UN humanitarian office in Palestine, Jonathan Whittall, said that "criminal gangs operating under the supervision of Israeli forces near Kerem Shalom are systematically attacking and looting humanitarian convoys."

The Gaza Private Transport Workers Union (the union provides trucks and drivers for humanitarian convoys) said that the Abu Shabab group "attacked our trucks many times and the Israeli occupation forces did not act."
