France To Launch Drone Production In Ukraine

The defense secretary called the initiative a "win-win partnership."

French automotive and defense companies will start producing drones on Ukrainian territory. This was announced by French Defense Minister Sebastien Lecornu, calling the initiative a "win-win partnership". According to the minister, it is a cooperation between one of the leading French automobile manufacturers (he preferred not to disclose its name) and a small or medium-sized defense sector core enterprise. "Together they will create production facilities in Ukraine, where the drones will be assembled," the defense minister said (quoted by Le Monde).

The types and specific purpose of the drones Lecorniou did not specify, but stressed: some of the products will be transferred to the Ukrainian military, while others will be intended for use in France itself. According to him, the French troops will be able to use these drones during regular exercises, as close as possible to the conditions in which Ukraine is fighting today.

The Minister separately emphasized that Ukrainian specialists will work at Ukrainian factories. In his opinion, the country has demonstrated a high level of competence in the development of drones and in the formation of practical approaches to their use: "Ukrainians surpass us in the ability not only to design drones, but also to develop modern combat doctrines for them," he noted.

Lecornu's statement came shortly after his talks with the head of the Ukrainian Defense Ministry Rustem Umerov. During their meeting on June 5, they discussed expanding industrial cooperation, including the participation of French companies in the production of drones for the needs of the AFU. "We are ready to provide this opportunity to the best manufacturers. Ukraine has combat experience, France has a powerful industrial base. This is a mutually beneficial and strategic partnership," Umerov emphasized, thanking Lecorny for his support.

Besides drones, the ministers also discussed joint production of other types of weapons, including air defense equipment. It is assumed that the assembly could be carried out both in Ukraine and France.

On the same day, Rustem Umerov held a meeting with Spanish Defense Minister Margarita Robles. The discussion also centered on the development of industrial cooperation - primarily in the field of unmanned technologies.
