In mid-April, billionaire and associate of US President Donald Trump Ilon Musk had a conflict with Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent that escalated into a physical altercation. This was reported on June 7 by The Washington Post, citing podcaster and Trump's top political adviser Steven Bannon.
He said Musk and Bessent then went to the Oval Office to lay out their preferences for the acting commissioner of the Internal Revenue Service. Trump decided to support Bessent's choice.
Bannon said that after Bessent and Musk left the Oval Office and headed down the hallway, they began exchanging insults. During the confrontation, Bessent mentioned Musk's claims that he would uncover more than $1 trillion in wasteful and fraudulent government spending, something Musk failed to do. Bessent called his opponent a fraud.
In response, Musk slammed his shoulder into Bessent's chest "like a rugby player," Bannon said, and Bessent hit him back. Several people stepped in to break up the crowd, and Musk was pushed out of the West Wing.
"President Trump heard about it and said, 'This is too much,'" Bannon recounted.
