Donald Trump sharply criticized Ilon Musk, saying the latter would face "very serious consequences" if he decides to fund the Democratic Party.
In a phone interview with NBC News Trump accused Musk of "disrespecting the office of the presidency" and said their personal relationship was likely over.
Earlier this week, Musk criticized the Republicans' proposed budget bill and published a series of posts on X, including a deleted post calling for Trump's impeachment. In response, the former president said Musk's funding of Democrats could be grounds for canceling government contracts with Musk's companies, including SpaceX.
In posts on Truth Social, Trump said the biggest budget savings is ending federal subsidies for Elon. "It always amazed me that Biden didn't do that!" - he wrote.
Trump also rejected calls for a formal investigation into Musk's business operations, saying he was not yet considering such a move. At the same time, he left the door open for further action, saying: "I would be allowed to do that."
Vice President J.D. Vance, commenting on the situation, said Musk's attacks on the president were "nuclear" and could make it impossible for the billionaire to return to Trump's political camp. He also called criticizing the bill a "huge mistake" on the part of the businessman.

Musk, who previously provided significant financial support to Trump's campaign, now appears to be distancing himself from the Republican camp. Trump responded by saying that the Republican Party has only been strengthened by the conflict and expressed confidence in approving the bill before July 4.
