Mass protests broke out in the city.

President President Donald Trump's administration on Saturday, June 7, ordered 2,000 National Guard troops to the streets of Los Angeles, the nation's second most populous city. The reason for deploying the military on the city's streets were demonstrations that erupted after large-scale immigration raids by authorities, Bloomberg and The Guardian reported.

Late this week, federal Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents staged a massive special raid operation in the main economic hub of the US West Coast and arrested at least 44 people in the city on suspicion of immigration violations.

This sparked discontent, especially among residents of the city's predominantly Latino neighborhoods. As a consequence, the first wave of protests swept through the city as early as Friday night, with about "1,000 rioters" taking part, according to the U.S. Department of Homeland Security.

On Saturday, the protests only intensified and became more widespread, leading federal ICE agents to use tear gas and batons to disperse crowds in the Paramount neighborhood, Reuters reported. Footage viralized on social media showed protesters throwing objects at passing police vehicles. The footage also shows clashes with police - overturned cars, barricades on the roads, flags and slogans - all the classic attributes of street riots on the face.

"This 'protest' looks like a war zone," a media outlet commented on what is happening on the streets of Los Angeles.

In the meantime, Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass initially came out rather on the side of the protesters, accusing ICE agents of "sowing fear" in the city. The White House's decision to bring National Guardsmen into the city did not please California Governor Gavin News either. He called it "intentionally provocative." In his X post, the governor said that Trump is engaging the National Guard "not because there aren't enough law enforcement officers, but because they want a spectacle," and urged protesters not to go along with the authorities and "not make it a spectacle."

For this stance, local authorities have already received a public rebuke from US President Donald Trump. On his Truth Social platform on June 7, the politician wrote that if Newsom and Bass can't do their jobs, "then the federal government will step in and solve the riots the way they should be solved!!!" The politician, however, did not specify what other measures the White House might take to bring peace back to the streets of the "city of angels."

At the same time, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth warned that the Pentagon is prepared to mobilize active troops "if the violence continues" in Los Angeles. He said Marines at neighboring Camp Pendleton are already "on high alert."

In the meantime, video of how the protesters greeted the National Guardsmen arriving in the city has been circulating on social media.
