Media: Ukrainian "Spider's Web" May Become An Important Lesson For China

Similar tactics could be used in the case of a conflict in the Taiwan Strait.

Operation Web, in which Ukraine hit air bases deep inside Russia despite having no long-range missiles or bombers, could be an important lesson for modern warfare in the event of a conflict in the Taiwan Strait, writes SCMP.

"This lesson is not just for Russia. [Such attacks] can easily be carried out by secret services or special military operations," said Chinese military aviation analyst Fu Qianshao.

The lesson for China is that it will need to defend itself against enemy forces infiltrating military bases in this way, he said.

China also has a vast territory and numerous military bases thousands of kilometers deep in its "strategic rear." However, Operation Web has shown that drones can effectively threaten such locations, noted Timothy Heath of the Rand Corporation.

"Drones can be placed close to a target and are difficult to defend against," Heath said. "It also showed that there are few truly safe places left in war zones."

At the same time, a military analyst at Janes intelligence firm Costas Tigkos said the Web approach could be replicated in any future conflict in the Taiwan Strait.

While China could use similar tactics in Taiwan, "Taiwan may be in a better position to defend against such an invasion given its smaller size compared to Russia," according to Tigkos.

At the same time, Heath said Taiwan would face serious problems trying to replicate Ukraine's success in striking targets deep inside the Chinese mainland because of the difficulty of moving bombs across the strait to the mainland.

He emphasizes that Ukraine and Russia have a large land border through which "it is easier to smuggle contraband."
