Pope Leo XIV has declared openness to ecumenical dialog.
The head of the Catholic Church Pope Leo XIV declared openness to ecumenical dialog in order to determine a common date for the celebration of Easter. This is reported by Vatican News.
The pontiff's speech was delivered in Rome during a solemn event marking the 1700th anniversary of the First Council of Nicaea, a historic event that, among other things, aimed to establish a single date for the celebration of the Resurrection of Christ for all Christians.
Leo XIV emphasized that this goal remains relevant today and called on Christians of different denominations to find a solution that would be consistent with the spirit and decrees of the Council of Nicaea without violating its theological principles.
"Unity in the celebration of Easter strengthens our ability to witness to Christ before the world and to proclaim the Gospel with greater force and conviction," the Pope emphasized.
An earlier similar initiative was expressed by Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew I, who considers disagreement on the dates of Easter celebrations a "painful division" and urges Christians to find a compromise.
Discussing a unified date for celebrating Easter remains a key issue between Catholics and Orthodox as part of a broader dialogue on Christian understanding.
