NATO Secretary General Calls For A "quantum Leap" In Defense Investment

Because of the Russian threat.

NATO members need to make a "quantum leap" in collective defense amid the ongoing threat from Russia. Air and missile defenses need to be increased by 400%.

NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte said this, RBC-Ukraine reported, citing Bloomberg.

"The danger will not disappear even when the war in Ukraine ends. We must have more forces and capabilities to fully implement our defense plans," his speech and Chatham House.

The former Dutch prime minister will say that NATO members need to increase air and missile defense by 400%.

"We see in Ukraine how Russia is carrying out terror from above, so we will strengthen the shield that protects our skies," Rutte said in a prepared speech.

NATO Spending

Rutte wants NATO countries to back a new military spending target of 3.5 percent of national product by 2032 at a meeting later this month, as well as 1.5 percent of gross domestic product to be spent on security-related projects such as cyber and border control.

The call followed U.S. President Donald Trump's demand that NATO members allocate 5% of GDP to defense.

NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte said earlier that Russia, with a much weaker economy than NATO, produces in three months the amount of munitions that the alliance produces in a year.
