Italy's Citizenship Referendum Has Failed

Because of the low turnout.

Italy has concluded a two-day referendum in which citizens were to decide on simplifying citizenship procedures and revising labor reforms.

According to Ansa.

After polling stations closed for the referendum, turnout across the country, according to initial data, is 29.15%.

This means that the results of the referendum will not be binding, as turnout did not reach the required level The referendum included five questions: four on labor law and one on citizenship - those who took part in the referendum supported the proposed changes.

The government has already expressed the need to change the law on referendums, as a lot of public money was spent on this failed plebiscite.

"At the same time, it was a defeat for the left and the opposition, who wanted to try to attack the government by scrapping the referendums. It didn't work, the government strengthened and the opposition weakened," Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani said.
