"Putin Is Deaf To The Voice Of Reason."

The U.S. Congress made a high-profile announcement about sanctions.

Speaker of the US House of Representatives (lower house of Congress) Mike Johnson said that he did not rule out the possibility of a vote on a bill on sanctions against Russia. He stressed that the Russian dictator needs to send a message.

This is how Johnson responded to a question from reporters at the Capitol on Wednesday, July 9, noting that there is "interest in doing so" in the House of Representatives. This is according to The Hill.

"Vladimir Putin has shown an unwillingness to be reasonable and to talk seriously about a peace settlement, and I think we should send him a message, that's my opinion," the speaker said.

His comments came shortly after Senate Majority Leader John Thune said the Senate could vote on a sanctions bill against Russia, authored by Lindsey Graham and Richard Blumenthal, by the end of the month. In addition, President Donald Trump said Tuesday that he is "very seriously considering this bill."

Johnson has previously advocated punishing Russia for its prolonged conflict. "There are many members of Congress who want us to impose the strongest possible sanctions on Russia ... and I'm in favor of that," he said in June.

But his new statements open the way for the Senate bill, which has more than 80 co-sponsors and is veto-proof, to reach President Trump's desk.

John Thune said the upper chamber of the U.S. Congress has made "significant progress" on a sanctions bill against Russia, adding that it could be ready for consideration in the coming weeks.

"Republicans in the Senate are committed to working with the House of Representatives and the White House to get this legislation through Congress and onto the president's desk," he said.
