The peacekeeping mission plan is ready.
France and the UK are planning to send 50,000 soldiers and officers to Ukraine as peacekeepers, French President Emmanuel Macron has said. Thus, he said, the size of the joint force will grow to an army corps that could be involved in a major battle. At the same time, the Franco-British expeditionary force will become the basis of a future international contingent whose task will be to observe the ceasefire in Ukraine, Macron noted, writes The Moscow Times
British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, for his part, said that the plan for a peacekeeping mission in Ukraine is ready. He said it could be implemented "within hours" after the signing of a ceasefire agreement between Russia and Ukraine. Starmer called the plan "elaborate" and "designed for the long term." Macron added that the coalition of 30 countries would help enforce the ceasefire in the air and at sea, as well as help rebuild the Ukrainian army.
Before that, France and Britain, as well as countries from the "coalition of the willing" to help Ukraine, discussed sending up to 30,000 peacekeepers to Ukrainian territory. The group was to be stationed in Kiev, Odessa and Lviv and to be there as a "support force" for the Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU). Russia has strongly opposed the deployment of NATO military countries in the neighboring country. "If they appear there, it means that they are stationed in a conflict zone with all the consequences for these contingents as a party to the conflict," Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Alexander Grushko said.
At the same time, Macron said the deployment of a European peacekeeping contingent in Ukraine after the end of the war would not require Russia's consent. "Ukraine is sovereign, and if it asks allied troops to be on its territory, it is not for Russia to decide whether to agree or not," Macron noted. He said the deployment of peacekeepers would be one of the negotiating points because "it is clear that the Ukrainians can in no way make territorial concessions and have no security guarantee."
Before that, Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky called for the deployment of 100,000 peacekeepers on the country's territory to effectively monitor compliance with a potential peace agreement. The United States supported the deployment of a European peacekeeping contingent but refused to send its own military.
