Ukraine And 11 Other States Join EU Demand To Release Belarusian Political Prisoners

The delegation of the European Union in the Council of Europe called for the immediate and unconditional release of political prisoners in Belarus, their rehabilitation and cessation of repression on July 9 at a meeting of the governing body of the organization Committee of Ministers in Strasbourg (France), reports "Radio Racyja".
The statement, issued on behalf of all EU states, was joined by 12 countries: Albania, Andorra, the UK, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Moldova, Monaco, Montenegro, Norway, San Marino, North Macedonia, Ukraine and the UK.
The statement welcomed the release of Sergei Tikhanovsky and 13 other political prisoners thanks to the participation of the US. The document emphasizes that the EU "remains deeply concerned about the human rights situation in Belarus and strongly condemns the prolonged campaigns of harassment and intimidation against all sectors of Belarusian society, including human rights defenders, journalists, independent trade union activists, civil society representatives and persons belonging to national minorities."
