U.S. Senate Approves $500 Million For Weapons For Ukraine

The aid is approved as part of the U.S. National Defense Authorization bill for fiscal year 2026.

The US Senate Armed Services Committee approved $500 million in security assistance for Ukraine as part of the US national defense bill for fiscal year 2026, writes Reuters.

It is noted that the bill is an annual document that determines the funding level and authority of the US military. It ensures that the U.S. military has the necessary resources to carry out its missions and is closely watched by weapons manufacturers, particularly Lockheed Martin and Boeing.

According to Reuters, the bill was approved by the committee on July 9, 2025 by an overwhelming 26 to 1 vote. It contains a provision to extend the Ukraine Security Assistance Initiative through 2028 and increase its funding to $500 million, up from the $300 million provided for 2025.

In addition, the publication writes, the bill prohibited the implementation of a controversial request that U.S. President Donald Trump introduced in June to decommission the U.S. Air Force's fleet of A-10 aircraft. The document stipulates that their number should not drop below 103 units in 2026, which would ensure the continued operation of these aircraft.

The bill will undergo legislative procedures in Congress over the next months. In addition to Ukraine, it also includes measures on global security challenges, particularly threats from China, Iran and North Korea.

In addition, the bill emphasizes the need for technological development in areas such as artificial intelligence, unmanned technology and hypersonic weapons to maintain U.S. military superiority.
