US Imposes Unprecedented Sanctions On Cuban President

Key government officials have also fallen under the restrictions.

The US has imposed tough visa sanctions against Cuban President Miguel Diaz-Canel and other senior regime officials. The measures were a response to the authorities' actions during the protests that took place in 2021.

This is reported by LeMonde.

The US State Department announced the imposition of unprecedented visa sanctions against Cuban President Miguel Diaz-Canel. Among the reasons are human rights violations and suppression of freedom of expression in Cuba.

The decision was taken in response to the violent crackdown on protests that rocked the island in July 2021.

Along with the president, key government officials have also fallen under the restrictions. They are the ministers of defense and interior, who were actively involved in the suppression of mass protests.

The sanctions include a ban on entry to the U.S. for these individuals and the freezing of their assets in the U.S.

The decision is another step in increasing pressure on the Cuban government to stop repressing citizens and start real reforms.

Washington notes that it supports the aspirations of the Cuban people to freedom and democracy, and calls on the international community to join the pressure on the Diaz-Canel regime.

At the same time, Havana regards such sanctions as interference in the internal affairs of the country and attempts to destabilize the situation. It is still unknown how exactly the Cuban government will react to these severe restrictions and whether they will lead to changes in the regime's policy.

Reminder that the 2021 protests became the most massive in recent decades in Cuba - people took to the streets, demanding an improved economic situation, greater freedom and reforms. In response, the authorities used force, detaining thousands of peaceful demonstrators, which caused international condemnation and a sharp reaction from the United States.

By the way, in late April, Republican Party senators Lindsey Graham and Democratic Party Richard Blumenthal introduced a bill on sanctions against Russia. The document provides for the introduction of 500% duties for states that buy Russian oil.
