A 35-year-old man, who "publicly abused the state symbol of the Republic of Belarus," was sentenced in Minsk, told the agency "Minsk-Novosti" in the prosecutor's office.
About half past five in the morning, the man was walking along Russyanova Street after a meeting with friends. He noticed a red-green flag on one of the buildings, approached, ripped it off together with its mount and took it with him.
Later he explained that he wanted to take the loot to his dacha, but changed his mind after a conversation with his wife and hung the flag on a bush.
The man's identity was quickly established by the cameras. A criminal case was brought against him for "abuse of the state symbol" (Article 370 of the Criminal Code).
The court took into account that the citizen of Minsk has a small child and sentenced him to three months of arrest. The decision came into force.
