What's going on?
The US State Department has begun mass layoffs of its employees as part of a campaign to reduce the federal government apparatus announced by President Donald Trump.
The Associated Press writes about it.
One of the department officials, on condition of anonymity, said that 1,107 civilian employees and 246 Foreign Service employees began receiving layoff notices.
State Department employees receive layoff notices via email and are placed on administrative leave immediately afterward. Foreign Service employees will be officially laid off 120 days after receiving the notice, while civilian employees will be laid off in 60 days.
The publication writes that while President Donald Trump, Secretary of State Marco Rubio and their Republican allies have called the cuts necessary to make the department more flexible and efficient, they have been sharply criticized by current and former diplomats who argue that such changes would weaken U.S. influence and ability to counter threats abroad.
In particular, the American Foreign Service Association condemned the developments, calling the firing a "catastrophic blow to U.S. national interests" at a "moment of great global instability."
