European Commission President Reacts To Trump's Announced Tariffs For The EU

"We are ready to defend the interests of the EU."

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen has reacted with restraint to the U.S. president's announcement of 30 percent tariffs on imports from the EU starting August 1.

In a statement on social media X, Ursula von der Leyen said the tariff rate for European imports announced by Donald Trump would "hit entrepreneurs, consumers and patients on both sides of the Atlantic."

- We will continue to work on a (trade) agreement until August 1. At the same time, we are ready to defend EU interests with proportionate countermeasures," the European Commission president wrote.

A 30% tariff on EU exports would hurt businesses, consumers and patients on both sides of the Atlantic.
