AFU Destroyed A Rare Russian Car

To date, only three such APCs have been confirmed destroyed.

Unusual modifications of the Russian BTR-80 armored personnel carrier have begun to appear on the frontline in Ukraine. Recently, the third such copy was destroyed, writes in his Telegram channel Ukrainian military observer Alexander Kovalenko.

He notes that the BTR-80 itself, of course, is not rare. But the Russians have recently started putting the 32G01 Boomerang-Burevestnik combat module on it. This version appeared in the combat zone only this year, and so far only three cases of their destruction have been verified.

The key difference between the new modification and the old versions is the use of a large-caliber Utyos machine gun (12.7 mm) or KPVT (14.5 mm) instead of the 30-millimeter 2A72 cannon as the main gun. And as Kovalenko notes, it's not because the new configuration is better suited for use at the front (quite the opposite), but because of the Russian military-industrial complex's banal inability to supply the required number of 30-millimeter guns.

- The Arzamas Machine-Building Plant makes [one] APC per month. More than the Tula Machine-Building Plant can afford to produce 2A72s, however paradoxical this may sound," the analyst said.
