Macron: Europe Must Prepare A Response To US Duties
Emmanuel Macron

If no agreement can be reached by August 1.

France shares the "strong disapproval" of European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen (Ursula von der Leyen) over the announcement of the imposition of 30 percent trade duties on EU goods from the United States starting August 1, French President Emmanuel Macron wrote on social media X on Saturday, July 12, notes Deutsche Welle.

"In the context of European unity, the Commission must more than ever demonstrate the Union's determination to stand firmly for European interests," the politician continued. He backed the EC in the negotiations, "which will now be intensified, with the aim of reaching a mutually acceptable agreement by August 1" between Brussels and Washington.

At the same time, Macron called for accelerated preparation of "credible countermeasures" using all the tools available to the European Commission, "including counter-coercive measures, if no agreement is reached by August 1."

At the same time, Donald Trump himself argued that in the event of a retaliatory increase in trade duties by the EU, Washington would act symmetrically.
