A direct meeting between an Israeli representative and a Syrian representative took place in Baku while Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa was there.
AFP reported this, citing a source in Damascus who wished to remain unnamed, reports Radio Liberty. The Syrian president did not attend the meeting, which focused on "Israel's recent military presence in Syria," the source added.
After the fall of the Bashar al-Assad regime in Syria last December, Israel launched hundreds of airstrikes on Syrian military installations and sent its troops into the UN-controlled buffer zone that previously separated opposing forces in the strategically important Golan Heights.
Although Israel has been distrustful of the new Syrian government because of its past ties to al-Qaeda and has targeted Syrian military installations, Ahmed al-Sharaa has repeatedly stated that Syria does not seek conflict with its neighbors and has called on the international community to pressure Israel to stop its attacks in Syria. The Syrian government recently confirmed indirect contacts with Israel to return to the 1974 agreement on the separation of Syrian and Israeli forces, which included the creation of a buffer zone.
In late June, Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Saar said that Israel is interested in reaching a peace agreement and normalizing relations with Syria. A Syrian government source quoted by Syrian state media responded by calling talk of an agreement with Israel "premature." However, during a visit to Lebanon this week, US special envoy for Syria Tom Barak said, "Dialogue between Syria and Israel has begun."
After meeting in May with Ahmed al-Sharaa in Riyadh, US President Donald Trump expressed hope that Syria would join other Arab states normalizing relations with Israel.
The Syrian president held talks with his Azerbaijani counterpart Ilham Aliyev during his visit to Baku, the two governments said. Azerbaijan announced the start of gas exports to Syria via Turkey, a key ally of both countries.
