Brussels is preparing a response to U.S. duties.
The European Union has prepared a broad list of duties against the United States that will come into force if negotiations with Washington fail.
It was revealed by Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani in an interview with Il Messaggero.
"A 21 billion euro list of European duties is ready, to which a second one could be added," Tajani said, talking about a possible response to Donald Trump's announced 30 percent duties against the EU.
At the same time, the Italian minister emphasized that despite being ready for a tough response, European officials have not abandoned attempts to find a diplomatic solution.
"[Europe must react] calmly and coolly. It should negotiate with its head held high, knowing that it is in everyone's interest to avoid a trade war. Europe needs America and vice versa," the minister said.
The duties announced by Trump are due to take effect as early as August 1, but Tajani expressed optimism that an agreement could be reached.
"We have two weeks... I am sure there will be progress. Duties hurt everyone, starting with the United States. If stock exchanges fall, the pensions and savings of Americans are at risk," the Italian minister said.
