Patriot anti-aircraft missile systems are Ukraine's most powerful tool for defense against Russian air attacks.
According to Forbes, Russian missile strikes have destroyed 80 percent of Ukraine's thermal power plants and damaged the most important hydroelectric plants. The Russian Federation also continues to attack Ukraine's gas infrastructure and its power grid.
In addition, it has increased its attacks on Ukrainian civilians, further emphasizing the need for a strong air defense in Ukraine.
Forbes stressed that Ukraine's ability to shoot down Russian drones and cruise missiles remains impressive at around 70-80% and so far the Patriot missile system has performed exceptionally well.
"The Russians have boasted that the Kinzhal is impossible to intercept because of its claimed speed of up to 12,000 km/h, but Ukraine's Patriot systems have repeatedly proven their effectiveness even against hypersonic missiles," the publication wrote and added that when Ukraine deployed the system near the front line in February 2024, it shot down more than 10 Russian aircraft in a month.
Ukraine has also managed to thwart attempts to destroy the air defense systems themselves. The publication noted that two years ago, Russia used its most advanced and expensive missiles to try to damage the Patriot systems protecting Kiev, but the system shot down 34 Iskander and Kinzhal ballistic missiles fired.
Ukraine has also found creative ways to protect the Patriot systems, using steel plates on the outside of the battery control units to protect them from shrapnel and explosions.
The two main types of Patriot missile systems critical to Ukraine are the PAC-2 (which shoot down cruise missiles) and the PAC-3 (which shoot down ballistic missiles):
