Kremlin and Foreign Ministry officials are confused by the statements.

US President Donald Trump's harsh threats against Russia came as a real shock to the Kremlin. Russian authorities rushed to make comments but failed to draw a unified line - Trump's rhetoric clearly took Moscow by surprise, writes "Dialogue.UA".

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov was the first to admit that Trump's statements shook Moscow. He said the US president's statements should be taken "as very serious" and the Kremlin would engage in a "thorough analysis" of them.

"We certainly need time to analyze what was said in Washington. And if and when President Putin deems it necessary, he will definitely comment on it," Peskov emphasized, not hiding the fact that some of Trump's threats are addressed to Putin personally.

The Russian Foreign Ministry is panicking

At the same time, the Russian Foreign Ministry brought Lavrov's not-so-influential deputy minister Sergey Ryabkov to the forefront.

He tried to sound threatening, but his rhetoric did not impress experts: "Russia does not accept any attempts to make demands, much less ultimatums," Ryabkov said, adding that unless the US and NATO take Moscow's position "with utmost seriousness," the war against Ukraine will continue.

With this background, former Russian President Dmitry Medvedev, known for his aggressive statements, suddenly decided to play the role of an "indifferent observer."

He called Trump's threats a "theatrical ultimatum" to which Russia allegedly "remained indifferent."

Moscow doesn't know what to do

According to the Russian leadership, there is still no unified strategy or even coordinated rhetoric in response to Trump's ultimatum. Some are making threatening statements, some are asking for time to "analyze," some are trying to mock threats.

But analysts note that Washington's new hard line and personal warnings to Putin have become a cold shower for the Kremlin, accustomed to cautious negotiations. A U.S. president who acts from a position of strength has thrown the Russian elite off balance.
