U.S.-made airliners, cars, chemical products, machine tools and medical equipment top a list of U.S. goods that the European Commission proposes to impose higher duties on if trade talks with Washington fail, Reuters reported.
The list sent to EU member states covers imports of 72 billion euros ($84.1 billion) worth of U.S. goods. It also includes electrical and precision equipment, agricultural and food products: various fruits and vegetables, wine, beer and spirits - totaling 6.35 billion euros.
The first round of retaliatory tariffs on goods worth a total of 21 billion euros was approved by the EU in April but not put into effect to give time for negotiations. The postponement has been extended until August 6.
U.S. President Donald Trump on Saturday threatened to impose duties of 30% on imports from Mexico and the European Union from August 1: Brussels called such a rate unfair and unacceptable. The EU is ready to continue negotiations, but European Commissioner for Trade and Economic Security Maros Šefčovič said the bloc's member states realize that countermeasures will have to be taken if they fail.
The European Commission originally submitted a second round of duties for discussion in May. At that time, the proposal concerned 95 billion euros worth of U.S. goods. Since then, the list has become shorter, but the main items remain unchanged.
There is no specific date for the possible approval of the list.
