New details of the conversation.
US President Donald Trump urged his Ukrainian counterpart Vladimir Zelensky to step up strikes on Russian territory and suggested attacking Moscow and St. Petersburg, two knowledgeable sources told the Financial Times (FT).
The White House chief asked during a July 4 phone call, they said: "Vladimir, can you hit Moscow? And St. Petersburg at the same time?" Zelensky said Ukraine was "certainly" ready to do so if the U.S. provided the necessary weapons. Trump has made it clear that he is considering such a move to "make them (the Russians. - ed.) feel the pain" and force Putin to the negotiating table, the FT's interlocutors noted.
After that conversation, US representatives provided Zelensky with a list of long-range weapons that could potentially be transferred to Ukraine via third countries. In particular, according to the FT's sources, the list included ATACMS missiles with a range of up to 300 kilometers, which Kiev had already received under President Joe Biden. However, they are incapable of reaching Moscow and St. Petersburg. Kiev had previously asked Washington to provide Tomahawk cruise missiles that hit at a range of up to 1,600 kilometers, but the Trump administration was concerned about Ukraine's "lack of restraint," the publication's interlocutor said.
