MAZ Buses Are Sold In Russia Less And Less

A 55% collapse.

MAZ managed to sell only 132 buses in Russia for six months. This is 55% less than it was in the same period last year, writes "Belarusians and the market".

At the same time against the background of the collapse of the Russian bus market MAZ managed to stay in the top 8 players.

At the end of the half-year in the top five remain: PAZ - 1985 units (-56%), Yutong - 542 units (-51%), LIAZ - 378 units (-74%), NefAZ - 246 units (-73%) and Higer - 193 units (-37%). LOTOS and JAC had the biggest decline (-97%). The only brand with growth is the Chinese Foton (+50%, 3 buses). Despite the decline in sales, the share of Chinese brands for the half year increased from 18.2% to 21.4%.

January-June the market of new buses decreased by 60%, amounting to only 4181 sold units. Not a single month was without a double-digit drop. At the same time, foreign brands lost 55% of the volume (933 units), but slightly increased their market share - from 20% to 22%. Russian manufacturers fell by 61%, selling 3,248 buses, which corresponds to a 78% share.

The authors of the study from Avtostat Info note that June and the first half of 2025 were the worst years for the market of new buses in Russia in recent years.

The segment was in a much more depressed state compared to other vehicle categories. In addition to the high 2024 base, the situation was aggravated by the reduction of federal fleet renewal programs, the collapse of imports due to the increase in the scrappage duty, and tight monetary policy, including the high key rate of the Central Bank, which practically froze leasing and loan sales.

The main reason for the sharp drop in imports was overproduction - especially of Chinese intercity buses of medium and large classes. After the increase of the scrappage tax in autumn 2024 and January 2025, as well as the refusal of leasing at the key rate of 20-21% (with final payments of up to 40% per annum), business simply could not maintain the previous level of purchases.

The decline in demand for Russian buses is primarily due to the curtailment of government programs. The responsibility for fleet renewal was assigned to regional budgets, which in the conditions of high Central Bank rate and limited financing are unable to maintain the pace of purchases on their own.
