The German leader was pleasantly surprised.
After another Russian attack on Ukraine, US President Donald Trump himself called German Chancellor Friedrich Merz. In the conversation, he supported the German leader's initiative to help Kiev, which surprised him.
The Wall Street Journal reports this.
The publication writes that Trump's change of position on providing military aid to Ukraine was the result of prolonged pressure from European leaders and NATO.
Finnish President Alexander Stubb struck up a friendly relationship with Trump during a golf tournament in Florida, and NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte regularly sent him approving messages. In an informal tone, he even jokingly referred to Trump as "Daddy".
German Chancellor Friedrich Merz met with Trump at the White House in June, then spoke to him by phone almost weekly thereafter.
In one such conversation, on July 3, Merz offered to buy two Patriot air defense systems for Ukraine - after the U.S. halted military aid to Kiev.
As the WSJ notes, Trump was probably not informed of the aid suspension, so right during the conversation he turned to Defense Secretary Pete Gegseth, who was present, "Pete, what's going on?"
A few days later, having seen the devastation caused by another Russian attack on Ukraine, Trump himself called Mertz and not only agreed to his proposal, but also offered to supply five Patriot systems instead of two.
According to the publication, such a move by Trump surprised the German chancellor. He realized that the U.S. president had begun to lose patience with Russian dictator Vladimir Putin.
Merz immediately agreed to buy five systems, although he will still have to find the necessary funding together with European partners.
